High-end wine is as much of a hoax as the art world is and as much of a hoax as a high-end restaurant charging $10K for a a once in a lifetime meal. It's as simple as supply and demand. Is a stock price a hoax? My answer? Yes and No.
I used to think that the amount I was being paid for my speaking engagements was a hoax, but then I realized that I was getting compensated for what I was doing for that event. Is an actor quietly getting $8 Million for a movie a hoax, as opposed to an athlete who constantly gets ridiculed for being over-paid? It's all an arbitrage. That same actor is putting people in the seats and ad budgets are being leveraged against the appeal of that actor/actress.
So, can I taste the difference between a $10 wine and a $100 wine? ABSOLUTELY. I live it. It's what I do. The beauty of wine is that everyone has their own palette -- similar to how people have different taste perceptions of art and music. It's simple branding. It's supply and demand. My advice? DON'T. DRINK.GOOD.WINE. It's all supply and demand. If you start to taste the good things (first class plane tickets, front row seats, etc.), you'll put yourself in the position to realize it's not a hoax. It's all perspective. It's context baby! Don't complain about it unless you're prepared to never taste it.

I don't think the examples of "first-class" and "front row" are valid examples in this context. Because you said that you can't really differentiate between a 100 dollar wine and a 1000 dollar wine, but you or anyone can clearly differentiate between first class and second class or between the first row and a crappy place.
Studies show that wine testers, not only can't in fact, differentiate between expensive wine and a cheap one but that they are not consistent, punctuating the same wine differently in different taste events.
Art has nothing to do with business. If someone gets paid a lot for a ten-second add is because that person generates sells, if someone pays a lot of money for a canvas in which some drunk dude poured painting is because there's a market with prices behind. Price is not value. Is a collectors game.
In my opinion, they can charge whatever for a bottle of wine and create a religion around the different classes of wine, etc, but they don have to fool themselves or anyone else in believe that behind the differences in prices are actually a difference in flavor and quality. Is a fucking collectors game. Be honest, like you Gary, when that guy asked you "you are the guru-wine. What that title means?" and you answered, "auto proclaimed". You didn't fuck around making up some shit to make believe others that you are better than others, you don take yourself so seriously. And a lot of people in the wine business do.
about hoax, I remember a case in which a establish wine magazine that punctuates wines was contacted by a newly opened restaurant to hire ads in his magazine. The new restaurant didn't exist, it was a study. The people that conducted the study choose wines that the magazine previously scored very poorly. But nonetheless, the "new restaurant" got a high score in his list, because they pay for adds. Is fucking business. (I can search the source of this if someone actually reads this and is interested. I think I read it in one of the freakonomics books).
Have a great day!
I believe we have gotten soft and that’s why people are looking for affirmation everywhere. We need to toughen as a society I think it will make us more confident as well. 6/2/2019
Did you notice what age you were when she stopped punching you in the mouth or was it after you stopped misbehaving?
Self confidence is huge for me, didn't have it 8 months ago and now I'm all about it. A very good feeling.
I think the USA has gotten incredibly SOFT! where any response can cause someone to get super emotional. There is a lot of people that are thin skinned when it comes to actual interactions.
7th place trophies are crap
children are people. will punching a person help them change their mind and behavior?
would me punching you change your mind?
Back in the eighties when my son was young, I once used a small wooden paddle on him. Afterwards he said, "They gave us a number to call at school if our parents ever did this." This was back in the day when the drug companies were having school kids fill out questionnaires asking if they ever felt like killing themselves, etc…Too much outside interference, I would say, as a psychologist. Damn right I would punch and have punched my sons… my daughter though all I have to do is BASS my voice and she cries. I don't want her to think it is ok for a man to put his hands on a woman. Yeppers I came back to this video from AGV217!
Younger* generations.
I do believe you get generations are softer. The topic of hitting a child I believe all depends on the outcome. My old school father whacked me a few times, and I deserved to be hit every time. At the same time it straightened me out and turned me into a respectful well behaved young man.
