I you are "unknown" it would be hard to get a book deal which pays you in advance. Self-publicaton can help but you have to husle all way through to sell enough books to make your money. Here in Germany, publishing houses do not pay that big in advance. So self-publication can be a good way.

funny clip. some armchair advice I might throw in is not to wait till it's done being written to start "marketing" it. promote with teasers, examples, reference in videos leading up. Perhaps best of all, launch a coming soon squeeze page to collect emails, facebook likes or equivalent… Writing guru tim ferriss obviously has some unique insights on some of this…
