You're in control of you. You're out of control of anybody else. so all you can do is focus on you and your process. not what you expect from that.
the second you have expectations of them, the second You're vulnerable the second you need them for validation. the second You're vulnerable I have no expectations I have standards I want these guys to be good people and do good work. but I don't think that they're supposed to do that and I think people get caught up in that.

Maybe he refers to bosses wanting their employees to do exactly what they tell them to and the way they tell them to, to feel in control. They're vulnerable because in their insecurity and their wasting time micromanaging, they stop working on being better managers and contributors to the company.
