Q: A lot of people don't think youtube will last forever. Should I hedge my risk by expanding to other platforms, or double-down on YouTube?
A: How many of those people have 2million+ subscribers? Go with your gut, you're already 100% correct. I made a HUGE mistake early in my career by going to viddler instead of staying with YouTube. YouTube is THE place for video content along with places like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and smaller platforms like Vimeo. YouTube is an anchor of online video consumption, and I think you're 100% correct to double down on it.

3M+ actually. But 4M is coming real soon.

Well, for someone with 2 million + subs it's certainly easy to make a living out of it still, but meanwhile, the people with around 30k subs are struggling to make a living out of it… Also getting to such a big number of subs is practically impossible with youtube nowadays, most of the top youtubes are no more than exceptions in a sea of frustration…ย pewdiepie's success started mostly with luck on the youtube system, matthew's sucess is mostly for doing catchy top10 style videos, that most people are willing to watch, almost like click bate, smosh have been around for much longer than the current youtube system, etc… Not saying their videos are bad or anything like that, just that they have a motive to be so successful today… plus alot of luck.
So no, Matthew really should not worry about making a living out of youtube, the smaller channels that put hours and hours work into a video that will hardly get 10k views that need to worry.

A question I've been trying to get to Gary is: How do you market a YouTube channel? Are there different strategies or things to think about? How is it different from marketing a startup?
–> Hope he'll see this one, I tried tweeting it to him.. ๐Padawan and Jedi Master ๐
