I'm really worried about 8th Place Trophies Not because I want to be mean to kids because I think we've taught a whole generation that Merit and the truth is not real and then they get into the real world and they're struggling because they've demonize losing. I Think the concept of demonizing losing is very, very dangerous because then you're scared of losing and life is tons of micro losses. Like it's okay if your soccer team sucked, it's okay. And we try to do these things to protect.

And in essence, it's like bubble babies and they get sick all the time, right? Or like zoo animals don't do well in the wild when you let them loose. My oldest is doing Jiu Jitsu right now and when he comes home I Don't ask him did he win I Asked him what do you learn? What did you work on today? What did you get better at today? Yeah, so it's of course competition is an important part of life. and I think telling people that winning doesn't matter is wrong. But also, instead of giving an eighth place participation trophy, why don't you just focus on what did you learn? How did you grow? Did you do your best? These are questions that allow your kid to feel proud of themselves without making up a reason to feel proud of themselves.

Kids need to struggle more. Especially while at home. Parents are meant to be there as a safety net so it’s ok for them to fail hard, fast and often.

Knowing Gary, he probably would say “Just love the process and forget winning. Happiness is the ultimate victory.”

“Without making up a reason for them to be proud of themselves” I like how that’s put ❤

I didn’t get any trophies and i felt like I failed most of life. I never got a participation trophie or 3rd place, you either won or you lost. It’s always been there, I am working thru seeing a loss as a lesson as opposed to failing. Because showing up matters. But I feel like giving this generation a “trophy” for participating isn’t demonizing losing but showing that showing up matters. And that’s a lesson in of it self. My generation saw winning is winning and it didn’t matter if it was an inch or mile 😂. Showing up and getting recognized for that, matters. Shows them people care when you try and when the “real world” shows them that showing up doesn’t matter, they stop showing up. That’s called having self-respect. It’s a good lesson.
