I would pay for a subscription to something like Ello but it would need provide a lot more value than it is right now. It's got a lot of the same tired social media tropes. It needs to find a way to connect people in an interesting more fulfilling way than Facebook or any other application out there for it to succeed in a subscription model.

    AdBlock Plus. That is all.

Well I posted about the Vaynerchuk on the Neistat channel and apparently you interviewed him on your Ask Gary Vee recently. Well anyways he has a Business section in some of his daily Vlogs. There's an interesting dynamic between you two.

I agree sell my data. Ads are a reality and I'd much rather be shown something I'm in the market for or relates to my interest than something that isn't relevant. It's such a small investment that was made that I'd hope the investors will sit back a bit and let them continue to define the company/market and not be looking to pull money so fast.

I've been saying for years I don't care about people having my data, not quite as you say as we want ads I'm still tripping over and blinkering them – thank god nobody bombs me with Lionel Richie tho lol. So yes most people care less about their data going and they will click some ads and miss even more.

    Would I pay, no.
    Will everyone else pay no.

Simple really some will pay and the media will hype it and say woooooahhh what's going on. While everyone else will get on with their lives.

Is there really any BUZZ about ello?
Let's be honest there isn't is there.

I know my connections amount to a lot less than 100,000, so my 2 invites to be on  ello that I ignored are probably scalable to those with millions if connections.

So if no buzz around something it's hard to see why people would give up being active  naturally where their friends and contacts are to go pay to be alone. People can do that on G+ without paying.

OK a bit of critique, if you pick up a pen hold onto it don't drop it lol, smiling and wanting to walk around your glass box with my macbook now so many people walking and working behind you. Now maybe I'll have to watch the whole episode and all the other 26 🙂

My muscles look bigger cuz today was chest day;)

And I've never heard of Ello so screw them

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hari Jay says:

It was really stupid of ello to come out and say they're gonna be the next facebook. Even if they charge peeps to use it, their biggest problem will be the classic chicken-and-egg.

I agree Gary. If "they" know what I like or market me something similar, like Netflix does with movies, I'm good with it. They're making my next purchase choice easier. Now, about Ello, I would not pay for it. I don't know if I'd pay for your videos by themselves but if each one came with a cheat sheet, show notes, extra steps, etc. I might be interested. Gimme bang for the buck brutha! LOL.

I've pretty much give up on privacy now, there so much leakage from ads that we don't really know where it all ends up and who uses it.
I'm totally with you, if there are ads then I want them to be targeted, I want to see pictures of sneakers, cars and cameras, not washing powder, noodles and plants.
I also wondered how they were going to make money, how can all that data be hosted for free? There has to be some trade off.
A year after you posted this initially and there were all those questions, where are they now?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hospitalityfan says:

Appreciate you reviewing the fringe platforms and how they could be successful. Like the contrarian viewpoints you share like: "I want ads that are targeted." Muscles are getting bigger.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hannah O'Brien says:

Great episode Gary. I absolutely agree with your theory. When we're online and using various social networking sites and apps we want to be engaged with things that interest us and resonate with us. That's why targeted ads are so great, they're working and eventhough people tend to get turned off with anything they class as an 'ad' on such sites, we're still clicking; they're keeping us interested and this is only going to keep growing!

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheZvjeronika says:

Try one show to do without mentioning brends 🙂 names, products or taglines. Btw. Why is there a jar with pencils?

A your Q: No. Because that social media platform did the major fail at start. Making platform closed and ignoring ppl at start is annoying and most ppl have said no to that.

Just got to episode 40… did you have question about hiring in-house CM or hiring outside agency?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Xcalybur says:

I completely agree with you Gary. I don't mind and actually like sometimes seeing ads that really target me.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cynthia Alvarez says:

True that Gary, it doesn't bother me that my data is being collected. It will makes it easier for me to purchase things that I want.
