Q: Does the consumer really have THAT much power or are we all just "sheeps" in the minds of marketers?
A: This is ridiculous, especially in this day and age. Marketers definitely have influence but we're not 'hypnotizing' people to make decision. There are so many variables that come into play -- a person's DNA, upbringing, education level, etc. And so, are customers being hypnotized? Absolutely not. There's just way too much information readily available for marketers to have the ability to control people's actions.

Customer is King
Anybody that actually understands marketing and practices it knows that people won't buy into your message if you treat them in a condescending tone or take them for granted. Its clear whomever was giving this person the 'sheep' advice is a jaded hack or a burn out – once you hate people you've lost too many times to be effective and all you have left is probably people that don't care enough to discern value.
I agree with "Common Man Cocktails". You can educated your audience, provide value and show them you care. Ultimately the customer decides. The customer ALWAYS rules.
People aren't sheep, they're just not always educated in what they want–and, a good business will educate the customer so they understand what it is they're actually looking for and provide the guidance to get the right product for the job.
You just hope, after that education is complete, they buy from you since you put the time and effort into teaching them the right solution for the job. They don't always, but more do than don't so it's worth the time on these "sheep."
