Brilliant convo. Really love how Gary 'holds' Jesse on parenting differently. Really great conversation. What parents do is only part of the equation though, one that fascinates me and there doesn't really seem to be 'a formula'.
My latest thoughts on this, the overprotection and not allowing kids to make their own mistakes, fail, figure stuff out themselves.
I don't have children but if I did, 2 question I would ask a lot:
1) Did you give your best regardless of what it is (from sweeping a floor to taking on a big challenge). Instill true pride and satisfaction all the way.
2) and this was a huge eye opener for me, learn to distinguish between being actively engorsed and addiction / numbing. Something I learned Brene Brown's research and really got me. eg the difference between a workaholic (who let's other parts of their life suffer) vs driven and values each part of their life. From the outside they can look the same, only inside do you know. Are Jesse's son game time and ice cream truly making him happy is what I would be asking or getting in the way of him not reaching for something he wants?
So many good takeaways from this one. Can't wait for Veecon 2023 🔥
The number of times Gary interrupted Jesse made this clunky and pulled away from Jesse’s brilliance. Gary could really learn a thing or two from Bilyeu. Maybe overtalking and interjecting has worked for Gary, but Jesse’s poise in dealing with only being allowed to speak from a perspective that supported Gary’s Ego was the key take away from this hour of my life. Thanks Jesse for showing us how to give someone the feeling of importance and respect while maintaining your own self respect and influence. I think you should end that partnership though. This dude is a vexation to your soul. No disrespect Gary but you should really go back and listen to this from Jesse’s POV.
wow gary is become shameless on interrupting people, i thought it was a clever new way of doing podcasts, but this left jesse infuriated and me as well, WTF gary. I suggest you call your next show "Gary Listens."
