Cutting out cultural cancer is always the right move. The happiness of employees is imperative, at all costs - it's important to cut toxic employees if their behavior doesn't improve after feedback, instead of "turning the other way" just because they're bringing in revenue. It’s very hard .. but it's incredibly necessary for great culture.

People are very confused Joy Doesn't come from four hour work weeks Joy doesn't come from free donuts Joy comes from firing and it's very hard because a lot of times people that are bringing the negativity to the organization are also top performers. Top performers come from two places. They're either driven by confidence or they're driven by insecurity. Most are driven by insecurity.

Insecurity then starts to manifest in their day-to-day in suppressing others. I Think it's very possible to have a work environment where people are going very hard but are very happy. but I only think it comes from the way we treat each other I Think the way you'll get to that Joy is if everyone's nice to each other and if you have the ability and the conviction to fire the three people in here that are.

Toxic people in the work environment are more often the laziest people who are allowed to get away with it. People have to pick up their slack and are held to a higher standard. Eventually, the entire employee base will reduce their productivity to match the laziest person, resentment will be the norm, and you'll lose your best people as they'll be frustrated with their job. In this situation, you might even confuse your top performers as the "d-heads" because they might just be putting out normal output and being mean about it because everyone else has dropped their productivity. What's the answer here? Fire the last person who is actually working but making everyone else upset? Or fire the lazy person who reduced everyone else's productivity and created the environment where this top performer had to be resentful about their work.
